How to Cure Bacterial Vaginosis at Home

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a common condition that can lead to sexual and reproductive complications. It can be easily diagnosed, and a course of antibiotics is usually all that’s required.

If BV is left untreated, it can lead to a variety of symptoms such as abnormal vaginal discharge, pain or itchiness during sex, and an unpleasant fishy smell. It is also linked to other STDs and can cause problems in pregnancy.

Home Treatments

How to cure bv at home? There are a number of different home treatments available for BV, including hydrogen peroxide, boric acid and probiotics. All have been shown to help reduce the chances of a recurrence of this infection but it is important to remember that BV does not always respond to home treatments and can be a serious condition.

Getting a Balanced Microbiome

Research shows that a healthy vaginal microbiome can lower the risk of bacterial vaginosis. This is because the bacteria in your vagina that produce lactic acid should be balanced to help prevent harmful bacteria from growing.

Taking a probiotic with lactobacillus is one way to encourage the good bacteria that naturally live in your vagina to work harder. Some studies have shown that this can prevent recurrence of BV and even help to cure it.

Clindamycin

If you have recurring BV, your doctor may prescribe metronidazole or clindamycin as a pill or vaginal gel. These medications are effective, but can be hard to take if you’re pregnant. They may also cause diarrhoea, nausea or vomiting.
